What is Counseling/Therapy?
Counseling/Therapy is an interpersonal treatment which involves building a therapeutic relationship that allows exploration of one’s personality as it relates to life’s difficulties. The goal of the counseling process is typically to alleviate emotional suffering, gain insight/richness to one’s life or to address behavioral/emotional concerns with a loved one. Therapists/counselors will often assist a client with gaining perspective on past events, understand patterns of thinking, address relational dynamics and clarify goals/desires for the future. Counselors may utilize a variety of counseling styles such as: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Psychotherapy, Reality Therapy, Marriage/Family Therapy, Rapid Eye Movement Desensitization (EMDR) and Play/Art Therapies. Therapists may employ the use of a variety of testing instruments to help with the therapeutic process. Your therapist may ask you to fill out a questionnaire or to take a psychological test to determine the best modality of treatment or clarify the diagnosis.
What is Psychiatry?
Psychiatry is a specialized field of medicine designed to treat emotional disorders, mental illness and behavioral disorders. Psychiatrists gather a comprehensive history and define current symptoms.
